Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport (JNB)
Airport Information

(Johannesburg, South Africa)

Previously known as the Johannesburg International Airport, the OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) of today is a modern complex with some 60 different airlines and a total of six terminals. OR Tambo is currently the busiest airport in the whole of Africa and lies roughly 22 km / 14 miles east of central Johannesburg and next to Alberton, Brakpan, Germiston and Kempton Park.

Johannesburg's airport features a particularly elevated situation and this in itself often has notable performance implications, where longer runways are required for take-off due to the low air pressure. Notable airlines at OR Tambo Airport include British Airways, South African Airways (Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens) and the city's very own Interair South Africa, which was founded in the early 1990s.

Johannesburg's busy airport offers travellers a range of ground transport to choose from, linking central Jo'burg and the many nearby districts, such as Fordsburg, Melville, Newtown, Parktown, Soweto and Yeoville. Particularly popular are the Magic Bus shuttle vans and authorised taxi services, while Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport also features minibuses for groups of up to 12 passengers, many car rental kiosks, and hotel-operated shuttle services. Those with shopping on their mind should jump in a taxi and head to the North Suburbs, which is home to the excellent Rosebank Shopping Mall, along with many notable restaurants.

About Johannesburg Tourism

South Africa's biggest city of Johannesburg is not traditionally known as a holiday location. Home to the noteworthy South African Constitutional Court, Johannesburg offers plenty of dry sunny weather, an increasing number of quality attractions, and cheap flights. Top sights to see include the Golf Reef City theme park, the expansive Johannesburg Zoo, the regular performances at the Market Theatre, the eye-catching Oppenheimer Tower, and sports matches at the Ellis Park Stadium, with has a capacity of around 60,000 spectators.

The city itself is without doubt South Africa's financial hub and Johannesburg Airport (JNB) is therefore of great commercial importance to business travellers. Johannesburg is home to a major African stock exchange, many government offices and Carlton Centre office tower, which is amongst the tallest skyscrapers in the whole of Africa and offers spectacular views from its viewing deck. Johannesburg Airport is also close to the townships of Alexandra and Soweto and a notable connection point for tourists heading to Cape Town, Durban and for a safari holiday at the highly acclaimed Kruger National Park.
