At Johannesburg International Airport (JNB) is an array of modern 21st-century facilities, distributed throughout its six main terminal buildings. There are full porter services (recognisable by their distinctive orange uniforms), self-service check-in kiosks known as Flightcheck and plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops.

OR Tambo International also boasts two public observation decks, with Terminal B (the Domestic Terminal) featuring a 180-degree vantage point overlooking the aircraft activities, while on Level 4 of the International Terminal's northern wing is a further viewing area.

Shops, Duty-Free and Retail Outlets

With around 100 stores on hand, many travellers are really quite surprised by the extensive shopping facilities at the airport. JNB is home to numerous gift shops, such as African Origins, Out of Africa and Taung Trading Post. For clothing, Hip Hop Avenue, Lacoste, South African Flag Store, Thomas & Benno and Timberland. Passengers looking to take advantage of their duty free allowance will find five outlets of Big Five Duty Free, all of which reside on the International Airside.

Bars, Cafés and Restaurants

There are roughly 40 eateries dotted throughout Johannesburg International, including airport cafes, candy shops, takeaways, sandwich stores and sitdown restaurants. On the International Airside, Domestic Landside and Central Terminal area you can choose between familiar branches such as Biltong On-The-Go, Cappello, Ekaya Food Court, Haagen-Dazs, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Piece A Pizza and Taste of Africa. For a quick snack, consider Subway, Fournos Bakery or the Sausage Saloon (hotdogs).

Banking facilities come in the form of Absa Bank and Nedbank branches, located on the Mezzanine Level of the International Arrivals Terminal. Close by, within the public concourse areas are various foreign exchange outlets, namely Absa, African Bank, American Express, Bidvest Bank Rennies, FNB, Master Currency and Travelex. Alternatively, if you are just looking for some South African Rand (ZAR), then you may like to use on of the ARM cashpoints (public concourse / shopping concourse).

In the Domestic Terminal, the Premier Conference Centre provides a useful venue for business meetings, presentations and seminars. There are various rooms, with capacities ranging from 10 people to more than 100 delegates. Internet access is provided by the 'Airport Online' service, with branches located within the departures areas of the terminals, for use of both passengers and the general public. Mobile phones can be rented from the Vodacom Superstore, on the Domestic Terminal's shopping level.

The needs of disabled passengers passing through OR Tambo Airport are well met, thanks to the commitment and efforts of Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). Allocated parking bays, special lifts, disabled toilets and ramps for wheelchair users are all in place. If you require any special assistance, it may be worth contacting your airline directly, before your arrival.

Other facilities at JNB include a medical centre with first aid facilities in the Terminal 4 building, within the Arrivals Hall, as well as numerous luggage trolleys. Also onsite is an Airport Medical Clinic, a post office (within the arrivals area of the International Terminal), a prayer area reserved for Muslim visitors, a chapel and baby changing rooms.
