The city of Johannesburg is often referred to as Jo'burg and is one of South Africa's most energetic and exciting destinations, with both hotels and youth hostels being scattered all across the city. Accommodation is usually very good value in the city, particularly when lodging is compared to that in Europe and the USA, although the cheapest areas, such as both Berea and Hillbrow, are not the safest parts of Johannesburg and best avoided.
The neighbourhoods of Norwood, Melville and Rosebank are all very reliable choices for accommodation. If you prefer to stay close to Johannesburg International Airport (JNB) itself, hotels are located just a short distance away, along Jones Road, Nectar Road, North Rand Road and Sunny Road, and also around Kempton Park.

Those needing to stay close to the airport will find a selection of nearby hotels, with the most noteworthy including the Holiday Inn and Airport Sun InterContinental JNB, both of which are within walking distance of the terminals. The Airport Sun InterContinental is particularly popular and contains almost 140 guest rooms, with facilities including a gym, restaurant, Internet access and business centre.

Johannesburg: City Hotels and Accommodation
Central Johannesburg contains many truly world-class hotels, located only 22 km / 14 miles west of Johannesburg International Airport (JNB). The city has undergone considerable transformation in recent years, with the main business district successfully relocated to the northern side of Johannesburg, together with much of its accommodation and shopping malls.
Many quality hotels can still be found in central Johannesburg, although this is no longer to most appealing or safest part of the city. As a result, hotels in this district tend to be cheaper and better value than those in the city's bustling northern suburbs. Close to Johannesburg city centre, hotels and guest houses in the Parktown district generally offer homely accommodation with pleasant surroundings, being well-placed to explore much of the city.
Further lodging is situated around the eastern suburbs of Johannesburg, where noteworthy regions including the city's colourful Chinatown district. Just a short distance from the city, South Africa's famed township of Soweto can be reached in around an hour and offers an array of traditional accommodation and more modern hotels.
