Johannesburg International Airport (JNB)
Airport Information
(Johannesburg, South Africa)

Previously known as the Johannesburg International Airport, the OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) of today is a modern complex with some 60 different airlines and a total of six terminals. OR Tambo is currently the busiest airport in the whole of Africa and lies roughly 22 km / 14 miles east of central Johannesburg and next to Alberton, Brakpan, Germiston and Kempton Park.

Johannesburg's airport features a particularly elevated situation and this in itself often has notable performance implications, where longer runways are required for take-off due to the low air pressure. Notable airlines at OR Tambo Airport include British Airways, South African Airways (Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens) and the city's very own Interair South Africa, which was founded in the early 1990s.

Particularly popular are the Magic Bus shuttle vans and authorised taxi services, while Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport also features minibuses for groups of up to 12 passengers, many car rental kiosks, and hotel-operated shuttle services. Of particular interest to historians is the onsite South African Airways Museum, which features a range of interesting aviation memorabilia.

The onsite facilities at Johannesburg International Airport are easy to find and include a large baggage storage depot, a medical clinic, and banks and ATMs, which are operated by ABSA, American Express and Nedbank. For information about available accommodation in Johannesburg, the Gauteng Tourism Authority counter is on hand to offer advice.
